Wow...that pretty much sums it up really :D
For those who have no idea who Nightwish are, allow my to give you a brief rundown. They're a 5 member band from Finland whose style of music would be classed as 'operatic metal'...at least, they were with their old lead singer, Tarja Turunen. They signed a new singer, Anette Olzon, around June 2007 after a falling out with Tarja towards the end of 2005. I suppose if you want a comparison now, think of Evanescence and you'd be on the right track.
The group consist of Anette Olzon (lead singer), Marco Hietala (guitarist and backup singer), Tuomas Holopainen (keyboard), Emppu Vuorinen (guitarist...and resident shortarse of the group *laugh*) and Jukka Nevalainen (drums).
While Anette doesn't have that same opera sounding voice, she did a real good job of doing some of their older songs at Seattle ('Sleeping Sun', 'Wishmaster' and 'Wish I Had An Angel' leap to mind). Anyway, the main reason I went all the way to Seattle (14 hours from Auckland with Air NZ) was because my, now, girlfriend (she lives near Whistler) asked me if I'd like to go...we kind of used the trip to see if there was potential to be BF/GF.
Anyway, this isn't suppoosed to be about us, it's about the band so back to topic!
After we'd booked the tickets and everything else, Nightwish announced they'd extend their tour to include Australia....which would have been a 4 hour flight for me but I'd still have to fly somewhere and seeing it with my best friend was too good an opportunity to pass up. We also found out after the concert that they'd be touring Canada again (this time including Vancouver) in April/May of 2008 :25:
We both got into Nightwish at the same same and figured that seeing the band together would be a very cool thing to do...particularly on Halloween (there's something special about seeing a 'goth group' on that date I reckon). The support act was Paradise Lost, and while they were ok, it was Nightwish who we were there to see and they came out around 10:30 and went past midnight so we got about an hour and three quarters from them. Marco wasn't wearing any pants....which he claims was from eating too much spicy food but I think he just wanted to dress up (or down in this case) for Halloween. Emppu wore a pumpkin hat for a bit which made him taller than the rest for once *laugh*
So to sum up....not that I've really said a lot but anyway....the concert was well worth the trip. I was a bit nervous as you never really know how a group will be live compared to a CD but, fortunately, Nightwish appear to be one of the few that live up to their standards. The cool thing about them is that even though they have some heavy metal music, they can also do the softer, nearly Celtic style, music too....very versatile group.
Oh, and their new CD, Dark Passion Play, is really good too....Anette didn't take very long to make her mark on the group. Favourite songs from it would be 'Amaranth', 'Eva', 'Sahara' and 'Meadows of Heaven' if I could only pick a handful from the CD.
Highly recommend going and seeing them if you're thinking about it, I certainly wasn't disappointed
